UMRFA Response: Response: Do residents and fellows actually have a voice? What evidence is there of that? HSA? The leaders of HSA work hard but have not been able to accomplish adequate pay raises or other benefit improvements in recent years. Unionization also does not take away direct working relationships with managers - that is an abject lie. Section 9(a) of the National Labor Relations Act, the federal law that governs collective bargaining, states in relevant part, “…any individual employee or a group of employees shall have the right at any time to present grievances to their employer and to have such grievances adjusted…” So, why is management lying about this? They know that unionization gives us the ability to use our voices together to speak with more power than alone…and they’re afraid of our collective power. Furthermore, by speaking with administration directly the union can bypass many layers of management that may impede our message and frustrate our collective goals. There is no doubt that there are managerial-level people who care about our wellbeing but their concerns may not always be heeded either.
